Nesting

After feeding, nesting is the most important behaviour that needs to be taken into account in bird management.

This is because birds are more strongly compelled to regain their nesting sites than almost any other location. Nest sites are also a serious source of human disease and a harbourage for a wide variety of insect infestations.

While sparrows breed very close to their main food sources;pigeons will travel a fair distance to their food, and gulls may nest at a great distance from their primary feeding sites. They all tend to congregate in breeding colonies. Sparrows will often nest within the building they are feeding, pigeons prefer nesting in sheltered secluded areas, where gulls are normally found nesting on roof tops.

This means that nesting sites are the most serious hazard to humans as well as the most difficult to proof effectively.
