Feeding

Birds invariably congregate in large numbers where significant amounts of food are easily accessible, and show a marked reluctance to disperse wherever it remains available.

Their fear of predators leads them to spend much of their day on elevated perches in close proximity to their feeding area from which they quickly fly down to collect the food when it becomes available.. They will often have a number of feeding areas within their territory and might only be found at each at certain times of the day.

This means that areas in the immediate vicinity of attractive food sources almost always require extensive bird proofing.

It also makes restricting local food access an important element alongside proofing in effective bird management.
