Displacement

If birds cannot circumvent proofing measures their natural instinct is to move to adjacent, less immediately favourable unproofed areas.

Like the degree of effort they will put into overcoming physical proofing barriers, the extent to which they will be displaced to nearby areas depends on the relative importance of the site to their natural behaviour.

If suitable sites on a new building in an already infested area are proofed prior to birds discovering them, the birds are unlikely to bother with them.

This means that parts of a building or other nearby properties or structures initially less favoured by birds can become well used once prime sites are effectively proofed.

It also means new buildings in problem areas need less heavy proofing than existing sites, making initial preventative work particularly cost-effective.
