After determining the most appropriate system for a particular installation, component specification and installation techniques are the most vital keys to bird proofing success. Not least because mistakes while working at height in public places can be extremely costly to remedy.

The strong compulsion birds have to regain key nesting, roosting and feeding sites combined with their considerable strength, persistency and ingenuity means proofing will be subject to robust testing from the day of installation. So any defects in materials or workmanship are most unlikely to go unpunished.

The 2007 National Urban Bird Control Study identifies the key priority for bird work as the greatest effectiveness of proofing – 95% of pest controllers reporting clients rating this as a high or very high priority.

A similarly high proportion (90%) report their clients wanting their proofing to last for the longest possible time, with 76% highlighting the least visibility and 50% the quickest installation as important priorities (Figure 4).
